Do you participate in on-campus interview (OCI) programs to fill such positions? Yes
Description of the second year summer program Upon arrival at the firm, you will participate in an extensive orientation and training program. This will provide you with the necessary tools to ensure a successful summer experience and will also provide an important opportunity for you to get to know your fellow students and to start to build valuable relationships.

You will have a formal mentorship team who you can discuss any aspect of your summer experience with. In addition to providing guidance and feedback on work assignments, they will help integrate you into the firm, share their tips on transitioning from school to practice, and share their knowledge and experience relating to the firm and the industry.

Our lawyers actively involve students on their files. Assignments have included such things as research, drafting, attending closings, attending Chambers and conducting witness interviews. You will be encouraged and supported to seek out the type of work in which you are most interested and to work with a variety of lawyers and practice areas.

In addition to participating in our student training program, you will have the opportunity to participate in many of the training sessions offered to our associates.
Comments In the absence of formal rotations for summer students, our summer students have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas or can choose to focus on a specific area of interest, which we make all efforts to accommodate. Your work will be challenging, intended to help develop your talents by bridging the worlds of law school and legal practice. Work is assigned to our summer students in three ways: directly from our lawyers; through our student committee; or on the initiative of the student. As students begin their summer with us, they are also assigned a major project to be worked on throughout the summer. We also have a secondment program intended to offer our summer students with another perspective on practice. Our secondments may include work experience at other Canadian Fasken offices or with clients.

Our summer social events have included such events as a “Nooner” baseball game at Nat Bailey Stadium and a Vancouver Whitecaps soccer match, which provide the opportunity for our students to socialize with each other and with our lawyers in more casual settings.

Our articling program is typically filled with returning summer students, though we occasionally hire additional students. During the articling year, students will rotate through four formal rotations: Business, Litigation, Labour, Employment & Human Rights, and Junioring.
How many weeks is the second year summer program? Typically 15 weeks

Articling Students

When do you hire articling students? When we recruit articled students, we do so in accordance with the VBA Guidelines.
Do you still have any articling positions open for this year (starting 2024)? No
Do you anticipate having articling positions open for next year (starting in 2025) for external candidates outside of your current student hires (if any)? No
If so, how many positions do you anticipate having for external candidates?
Do you allow students to work during the licensing process in your jurisdiction? No
Description of articling program We work hard to ensure that our students receive the training and experience necessary to reach their full potential. Upon arrival, you will participate in an extensive orientation and training program. You will have the opportunity to participate in our in-house student seminars on topics ranging from legal research and writing as well as substantive law to workshops on working with clients. You will also have an opportunity to participate in outside Continuing Legal Education seminars.

We collaborate with each student prior to arrival at the firm to arrange a suitable rotation sequence. While in your rotations, you will focus on practice groups within that specific department, learning the strengths of each of our Business, Litigation, Labour, Employment & Human Rights groups.

Articled students are given the opportunity to assume responsibility of some files under the supervision of experienced lawyers, and to be part of a team on larger, more complex matters. While all members of the firm play a significant role in assisting and advising students during their articling term, each student is assigned a mentor and principal. Your mentor, together with the Student Committee, is responsible for providing the support, guidance, and constructive feedback necessary to ensure the quality of your experience. As an articled student, your performance will be evaluated and discussed with you on a regular basis, and we encourage you to provide feedback to us as well.

Articled students are compensated at a level comparable to that offered by other major downtown Vancouver law firms. We will pay your salary while attending PLTC, as well as the enrolment and course fees.
