Please describe your diversity programs and initiatives As a leading Ontario law firm, Torkin Manes respects and encourages diversity and inclusion at our firm and in the community. We believe in retaining the best and brightest legal minds at our firm, regardless of gender, race, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, gender identity or disability.

We are proud to be a member of the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network (LFDIN), a group of Canadian law firms who have agreed to work together to promote diversity and encourage a culture of inclusion in our firms and the broader legal profession, and we are signatory to the LFDIN Statement of Principles.

Torkin Manes is an Employer Partner with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI). The CCDI is a made-in-Canada solution designed to help employers, diversity and inclusion/human rights/equity, and human resources practitioners effectively address the full picture of diversity, equity and inclusion within the workplace.

Our Commitment to Addressing Racial Inequality

The impact of the Black Lives Matter protests has resulted in a seismic shift in the perception of racial inequality in the United States, Canada and around the world. While there have been other moments in both the distant and recent past where we have witnessed protests and outrage and calls for change, the protests in the spring and summer of 2020 have resulted in a tipping point. The BLM movement has shone a bright light on the systemic anti-Black bias, violence and racism that afflicts our society.

We have asked ourselves, how may we best help to address this issue which is at the core of who we are and how we continue to build our society? We decided that words alone, while helpful, can be dismissed as platitudes, but words and actions together could possibly help to create and propel change.

We have commenced the following initiatives as our initial contribution to combatting systemic racism:

We have partnered with Osgoode Hall Law School to establish the Torkin Manes LLP Bursary, which will provide an award of $13,500 to two Black Canadian law students to allow them to pursue a career in law where financial circumstances may otherwise be an impediment.

We are working with law schools in Ontario to provide mentorship opportunities to Black and Indigenous law students, with several mentorships already in place.

We have instituted an initiative to ensure that we source Black owned and managed businesses which provide goods and services we require, so they have opportunities to secure our support.
As a firm, we have committed ourselves to fostering an inclusive and diverse culture within our workplace. We will continue to have the conversations necessary to better understand how we may contribute our resources and our energies to best help effect change in the broader community.

Justicia Project

Torkin Manes was one of the principal firms involved in the Law Society of Ontario’s Justicia Project, designed to foster the retention and advancement of women lawyers in private practice. Torkin Manes remains committed to the goals of this project with an internal Justicia Committee that continues to promote the advancement and retention of women within the firm.

Torkin Manes/WLAO Trailblazer Award

Torkin Manes and the Women's Law Association of Ontario (WLAO) established the annual Trailblazer Award to recognize a female law student for her leadership role in business and the law. This award is given to a student that best exemplifies the qualities of effective business leadership, innovatively applied know-how, and potential for growth.
