Coaching/mentoring program? Yes
Details of coaching/mentoring program Mentoring is very important to us. Summer and articling students are assigned associate mentors who can advise on any questions – big or small – and to meet with regularly. Various social events are also organized throughout the summer and articling to which students and their mentors are invited. Articling students are also assigned a senior lawyer who serves as their articling principal. Informal mentoring relationships are also highly encouraged; many senior lawyers take an active interest in the student program and involve students on files as much as possible, including taking students to client meetings and court hearings.

Comments Developing professional skills to work individually, together and with clients is critical to the success of the firm and its lawyers and students. Over the course of the summer, we offer a number of continuing legal education and professional skills sessions aimed at introducing our students to legal practice and providing them with a solid knowledge base, in areas including legal research and writing, advocacy and negotiation, due diligence, the “business of law”, court procedure (for motions and small claims matters), closings, time management and professional etiquette. As students advance from summer to articling, these sessions become more advanced to better prepare our students for practice as lawyers. We take a deeper dive into our practices areas during articling and topics covered include Banking 101, M&A Primer, Employment Standards Legislation and practice management skills such as Client Communication & Managing a Client File.

When our students rejoin us as associates, they participate in our best-in-class Learning & Development offering, unlike any other in Canada. A highlight of this is our International Academies, which are a unique opportunity to develop your professional skills, network with colleagues and connect with firm leaders. The Academies are multi-day programs that bring associates together from across the country. Our curriculum provides critical learning in business development, people management, leadership and communication skills for each phase of your associate career.

Our practice groups also regularly deliver programs for lawyers and students to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest legal developments. We also partner with best-in-class external program providers - including The Advocates’ Society and Marquee Group - to provide lawyers with opportunities to hone their litigation, finance and accounting skills.
