Description of the second year summer program |
Our summer program is relaxed with no formal rotation system, which enables you to work in as many practice areas as you wish. Our main practice areas are: Business, Litigation, Employment & Labour and Intellectual Property. We believe in giving you hands-on responsibilities so that you have the opportunity to learn and grow through doing. You will have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks such as assisting lawyers with trials, motions, mediations and/or arbitrations at all levels of court or tribunal, helping with due diligence, closings and other matters for transactions and financings, drafting many types of legal and supporting documents and researching and writing memos on various areas of law.
You will be paired with a formal mentor who will provide guidance and support as you transition into your career as a lawyer. In addition, many of our lawyers (including our Student Committee) are actively involved in the student program and are invested in the development of our students. As we don’t have a formal work allocation system, you will have the opportunity to shape your own experience and the files you work on, as well as be responsible for managing your own time. Our summer experience includes numerous continuing education sessions designed with you in mind and focused on developing both legal skills (e.g., research, drafting and advocacy) and business skills (e.g., networking and presentation skills) — all of which will be helpful as you begin your professional career. And we’re not all work! We host social events where you’ll get to know other students and practitioners within the firm. Events vary from year to year, and have included such things as a gourmet BBQ and canoe trip through the Toronto islands, bubble soccer, a relaxing evening on the patio with mentors, a night at Second City, an afternoon at a Toronto Blue Jays game, and an evening of recreational axe-throwing! |

You will participate in our formal review process during the course of your articles, which is designed to assist you in continuing to develop your skills and learning. In addition, you’ll participate in our comprehensive articling orientation and continuous learning and development program designed specifically to advance the knowledge and skills of our students.
