Description of the second year summer program We want you to succeed, develop new skills and grow with our firm. As one of our students, you will participate in a variety of rewarding and innovative programs as the first step to realizing your goals.

Our summer law program is tailored to match the individual interests of each student. Virtually a custom approach, we work with each student to design a summer program based on the student’s specific interests, thereby maximizing the student’s summer experience. As a summer student we will provide you with challenging work to help develop your talents and to bridge the worlds of law school and legal practice. You will learn and develop your skills through hands-on experience on a variety of files. The flexibility of our program will allow you to modify your experience as new opportunities are presented.

We recognize that knowing and understanding the business of our clients is a fundamental key to delivering effective legal services. We expose students to the business side of law by giving them opportunities to interact with our clients, both while working on files and through programs such as our Client Service Initiative (“CSI”). Working in tandem with our clients, we instituted our CSI to allow summer students to learn about a client’s facilities and to meet with members of the client’s senior business and legal teams to discuss issues faced by the client in running their business operations and to hear firsthand what they look for from their legal counsel. To date, clients that have participated in the CSI include the Canada Post Corporation, the Woodbine Entertainment Group, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Canada Lands, Canada's Wonderland, Angus Glen/Kylemore Communities, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Dofasco, Credit Suisse, Maritime Ontario FreightWORKS, Dufferin Aggregates, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and Bell Media Inc.

Our summer student secondment program was introduced in 2001. As part of the Summer Program, each student is encouraged to participate in an external secondment giving them not only the "Bay Street" experience but also another window into the practice of law. Our secondments offer the opportunity to experience the practice of law from one of a number of perspectives: that of a client, a government agency, or an NGO. Secondments are usually 4 weeks in duration and are planned for the end of the summer term. We will work with you to find a secondment opportunity that fits with your interests and goals for the summer. If you express an interest in a law-related secondment other than those traditionally offered, we will work with you to secure it. A small sampling of more recent summer secondments are: Canadian Olympic Committee, Compass Group Canada Ltd., CPA Canada, Electra Battery Materials Corporation, Enwave Energy Corporation, Fairstone Bank of Canada and its affiliates, Fasken Offices: Vancouver, Montreal and London, UK, Hillcore Group, IAMGOLD Corporation, Manulife Financial, Kensington Capital Partners Limited, Noetic Fund, Ontario Human Rights Commission, Ontario Securities Commission, PC Financial, Pro Bono Ontario, TD Bank Group, Stryker, The Co-operators Group Limited, The Kraft Heinz Company, Toronto International Film Festival and University Health Network.

Upon arrival at the Firm, you will participate in an extensive orientation and training program. This will provide you not only with the necessary tools to ensure a successful summer experience but will also provide an important opportunity for you get to know our lawyers and the other students and to start to build valuable relationships.

You will be assigned three Mentors based on the areas of practice you have chosen for your summer experience. Your Mentors will assist you in all aspects of your summer program, including integration into the Firm, monitoring workload and providing regular feedback.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in our continuing legal education programs and various practice group meetings. Our social events (which have included Blue Jays games, beach volleyball, bowling, winery tours, and the ever popular “Rec Room night” to name but a few) not only provide some fun but also present the opportunity for you to socialize with our lawyers in more casual settings.
Comments Your interests shape your experience at Fasken. Our flexible program provides you with the freedom to modify your experience as new opportunities are presented. This flexibility also allows you deeper involvement with the files that you are working on and the opportunity to see a file from start to finish.

We believe it is important for each student to have control over the development of his/her career. As such, you will be encouraged and supported to seek out the type of work in which you are most interested, to work with a variety of lawyers and to interact with clients. For more details please review our website.
