Description of the second year summer program |
WeirFoulds hired 6 2nd year summer students for 2024. We intend to hire in 2025.
Upon arrival at WeirFoulds in May, our students participate in a full orientation program, followed by an in-depth legal research training program. We provide an ongoing series of seminars on substantive and practice issues, including for example, legal memorandum writing, file and practice management, interviewing and client counselling, and introductions to various substantive areas of law. Each student is paired with a mentor who provides regular, ongoing guidance and feedback throughout the summer. Mentors also assist in ensuring that students gain a broad range of experience within each rotation including, for example, interviewing clients, drafting documents, conducting legal research, writing legal memoranda, assisting with corporate and real estate closings, and preparing for and observing court and tribunal proceedings. We also coordinate a variety of social events over the course of the summer experience. Past events have included cooking, attending a Blue Jays game, paint-nite, Segway tour, student/mentor quiz, mixology, patio drinks etc. The application and interview process for second-year summer students is governed by Law Society of Ontario rules. We will be participating in on-campus interviews this Fall. |

Description of articling program |
Our articling program is not divided into rotations. However, we do ensure our students get multiple views of the firm, rotating offices part-way through articling. Students have the opportunity to sit in three different offices, with different practice groups, by the end of articling. Our flexible program ensures students work with a wide variety of lawyers at the Firm and get to see a broad range of transactions/cases.
ONBOARDING Upon arrival in August, our articling students participate in a full orientation program, followed by an in-depth legal research training program. We provide an ongoing series of seminars on substantive and practice issues, including, for example, legal memorandum writing, file and practice management, interviewing and client counselling, and introductions to a broad range of substantive areas of law. MENTORING Each student is paired with a mentor who provides regular, ongoing guidance and feedback throughout the articling term. Mentors also assist in ensuring that students gain a broad range of experience within each rotation. We look to our articling students to take on significant responsibility for files at an early stage, working with lawyers at all levels of practice. Articling students can expect to gain experience in a wide range of work, including, for example, interviewing clients, drafting documents, conducting legal research, writing legal memoranda, assisting with corporate and real estate closings, and preparing for and participating in a wide variety of court and tribunal proceedings. Our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded articling experience through which they will gain hands-on experience with the support of individual mentors and training. FEEDBACK AND EVALUATIONS At the end of the each rotation, articling students are asked to identify those lawyers for whom they completed assignments. These lawyers complete an evaluation. Following this, the HR/Talent Manager will hold individual feedback meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to highlight to the students their strengths and provide developmental feedback so the students are able to grow and develop on their journey towards becoming a fully fledged associates. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS The Firm’s compensation package is competitive with our peers. We also coordinate a variety of social events over the course of the articling experience. Past events have included curling, cooking class, mini-golf, Spin ping-pong, mentor/mentee dinners etc. For more details about our articling student program, please refer to our website at www.weirfoulds.com/careers/students. |
