Description of first year summer program: Fasken Calgary provides a small firm feel, with the advantages and resources of a larger international firm. At Fasken, our goal is to provide students with summer positions that will be innovative and challenging, and will contribute to the development of exceptional lawyers.

Our summer student program provides you with a stimulating and challenging learning experience and is intended to begin building the bridge between your studies and your legal career.

Upon arrival at the firm, you will participate in an extensive orientation program. This will provide you with the necessary tools to ensure a successful summer experience and will also provide an important opportunity for you to get to know your fellow students and to start to build valuable relationships. You will be assigned a mentor. Your mentor is your sounding board with whom you should feel free to discuss any aspect of your summer. Your mentor will also assist you with integration into the firm.

You will have the opportunity to work with associates and partners on various matters. Assignments include such things as research, drafting, attending closings and attending hearings and court. You will be encouraged and supported to seek out the type of work in which you are most interested and to work with a variety of lawyers. Our lawyers will involve you as much as possible.

Articling Students

When do you hire articling students? Typically we hire our articling students from our 1L summer students.
Do you still have any articling positions open for this year (starting 2024)? No
Do you anticipate having articling positions open for next year (starting in 2025) for external candidates outside of your current student hires (if any)? No
If so, how many positions do you anticipate having for external candidates?
Do you allow students to work during the licensing process in your jurisdiction? Yes
Description of articling program Our goal is to ensure that your articles provide you with the requisite experience and training to ensure your future success. The flexibility of our program allows you deeper involvement in files you are working on, and the opportunity to seek out an experience that matches your career objectives. During your articling term, you will become an integral part of our team and work on major projects in various areas of law. Your interaction with clients will develop your awareness of the importance of excellent client service.

Our articling program is made up of two rotations: Business Law and Litigation. We collaborate with each student prior to arrival at the firm to arrange the rotation sequence. While in your rotations, you will be able to take work from any of the practice areas within that broader area of the law. If you express an interest in a particular area, we will endeavour to seat you near the lawyers who practice in that area, and you can seek out as much work from them as you want.

Respecting the diversity and interests of our articling students, no two students will follow the same program throughout the articling year. As an articling student with Fasken, you have the ability to direct your own career, with the assistance and guidance of your principal and mentor, the Student Committee and the Senior Director, Professional Resources. Formal evaluations are conducted at the end of each rotation.

The strength of our practice groups allows you to gain experience in your areas of interest and to explore other fields of practice as your interests evolve. The firm's commitment to training, education and mentoring will guarantee a meaningful and rewarding articling experience.
Comments Our articling program ensures that your articling term closely resembles the experience you will receive as an associate with our firm. We offer you a flexible rotation system designed to give you practical experience. For further details, please visit our website - fasken.com/cgy-recruit.
