In the last fifteen years, we have delivered more than 135,000 hours of pro bono services, valued in excess of $55 million, assisting those who need access to justice across Canada. In In 2022, 35% of our lawyers engaged in pro bono work, resulting in a value of over $4.7 million dollars. This percentage is a testament to the value placed within our Firm on inclusion and community engagement.
We are especially proud of the below pro bono initiatives: • Our firm acted for the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) in its first ever intervention at the Supreme Court of Canada, in R v. Chouhan, 2021 SCC 26. The Court considered whether amendments to the Criminal Code that abolished accused’s peremptory challenges in the jury selection process violated their right to a fair hearing or right to trial by jury. With the overrepresentation of Black accused in the criminal justice system, CABL intervened to bring the special circumstances facing Black accused to the Court’s attention in its determination of the issue. It was our privilege to advocate on CABL’s behalf. Our team consisted of Black lawyers across the firm nation-wide, and we worked with co-counsel at Brauti Thorning LLP. • Korean Legal Clinic: This pilot project in Toronto offers pro bono summary advice in the Korean language for area residents with a gross annual income of $60,000 or less. • PBSC Indigenous Human Rights Clinic: In partnership with PBSC, the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, and the Ontario and Canadian Human Rights Commissions, we have contributed to the development of a new human rights clinic. Our lawyers will provide culturally sensitive legal services to Indigenous clients, representing them at mediations and tribunals. • In 2020, we innovated our Summer Student Program to incorporate our commitment to pro-bono and support communities most in need. Students across the country created 33 unique, meaningful projects with 19 regional and national organizations across the country, supporting communities often forgotten with over 2000 hours of pro bono support over the summer. This impactful program is we hope to continue with our students in the coming years. |

The McCarthy Tétrault Foundation was established in 1997, a first among Canadian law firms, with the goal of giving back to the communities in which we reside and work. Since it’s inception, the McCarthy Tétrault Foundation has invested more than $18.5 million in non-profit organizations, local programs and initiatives that improve the lives of everyday Canadians.
In 2022, the Foundation donated over $510,000 in support more than 118 organizations and causes, including hospitals, local charities, food banks, youth and cultural programs, arts organizations and law schools. We launched Inclusion Now with a $5M, 5 year donation to United Way Centraide (renewed in 2023) to support women, members of the LGBTQ2S community, Indigenous peoples, newcomers, and people with disabilities. Our Firm and our people donated $1.8M in 2022, supporting over 12,000 newcomers, Indigenous peoples, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, people with disabilities and women across Canada. In total, our gift has helped 46,642 people since it’s inception. Investing in Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour: • $1M of our United Way gift is directed towards agencies that provide support and services to Indigenous peoples. • The Firm actively supports organizations that work to advance Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour within the profession and beyond, including the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers, MAX (Muslim Awards of Excellence), Black Future Lawyers, Black Law Students Association, Aboriginal Legal Services, Indspire, Level Justice, The Martin Family Initiative, Pro Bono Students Canada and more. |
