Description of the second year summer program We want you to succeed, develop new skills and grow with our firm. As one of our students, you will participate in a variety of rewarding and innovative programs as the first step to realizing your goals.

Our summer law program is tailored to match the individual interests of each student. Virtually a "custom" approach, we work with each student to design a summer program based on the student’s specific interests, thereby maximizing the student’s summer experience. As a summer student we will provide you with challenging work to help develop your talents and to bridge the worlds of law school and legal practice. You will learn and develop your skills through hands-on experience on a variety of files. The flexibility of our program will allow you to modify your experience as new opportunities are presented.

We recognize that knowing and understanding the business of our clients is a fundamental key to delivering effective legal services. We expose students to the business side of law by giving them opportunities to interact with our clients, both while working on files and through programs such as our Client Service Initiative (“CSI”). Working in tandem with our clients, we instituted our CSI to allow summer students to learn about a client’s facilities and to meet with members of the client’s senior business and legal teams to discuss issues faced by the client in running their business operations and to hear firsthand what they look for from their legal counsel. To date, clients that have participated in the CSI include the Canada Post Corporation, the Woodbine Entertainment Group, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Canada Lands, Canada's Wonderland, Angus Glen/Kylemore Communities, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Dofasco, Credit Suisse, Maritime Ontario FreightWORKS, Dufferin Aggregates, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and Bell Media Inc.

Students may also gain a different perspective on the practice of law through our external secondment program. Past secondment placements have included other Fasken Canadian offices, client offices and government agencies.

Upon arrival at the Firm, you will participate in an extensive orientation and training program. This will provide you not only with the necessary tools to ensure a successful summer experience but will also provide an important opportunity for you get to know the other students and to start to build valuable relationships.

You will be assigned three Mentors based on the areas of practice you have chosen for your summer experience. Your Mentors will assist you in all aspects of your summer program, including integration into the Firm, monitoring workload and providing regular feedback.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in our continuing legal education programs and various practice group meetings. Our social events (which have included virtual beer tasting, beach volleyball, winery tours, and the ever popular “Rec Room night” to name but a few) not only provide some fun but also present the opportunity for you to socialize with our lawyers in more casual settings.
Comments Your interests shape your experience at Fasken. Our flexible program provides you with the freedom to modify your experience as new opportunities are presented. This flexibility also allows you deeper involvement with the files that you are working on and the opportunity to see a file from start to finish.

We believe it is important for each student to have control over the development of his/her career. As such, you will be encouraged and supported to seek out the type of work in which you are most interested, to work with a variety of lawyers and to interact with clients. For more details please review our website.

Your interests shape your articles at Fasken. Our flexible program provides you with the freedom to modify your rotations during the articling term. This flexibility also allows you deeper involvement with the files that you are working on.

The strength of each of our business law and litigation sections, and the variety of practice groups within those sections, allow you to gain experience in your areas of interest and to explore other fields of practice as your interests evolve.

While all members of the Firm play a significant role in assisting and advising students during the articling term, each student is formally mentored by two of our lawyers. Your Mentors, together with the Student Development Committee, are responsible for providing the support, guidance and constructive feedback necessary to ensure the quality of your experience.

As an articling student, your performance will be evaluated and discussed with you on a regular basis. And, of course, we will want to hear from you on how we measure up to your expectations.

We work hard to make sure students have every opportunity to learn, grow and develop into the future leaders of our firm. You will be paid at a level comparable to that offered by other major law firms in Toronto.
